Susan Dallas Hattan has been an attorney for over 25 years and is licensed to practice law in California and Colorado.
Estate Planning: Susan has a passion for service and helping others. The primary focus of her practice is estate planning, and her mission is to provide the highest quality legal services to her clients and to help families achieve financial independence and protection.
She strives to provide certainty, clarity, and peace of mind while eliminating doubt about her clients’ futures.
Tax: Since its inception in 2013, Susan was actively involved with the Talega Residents for Fair Taxation citizen’s advocacy group and provided her expertise to ensure the fair and legal taxation of Talega citizens with regard to Mello-Roos special taxes. In 2014, this group successfully advocated and convinced the CUSD Board of Trustees to return over-collected funds to the taxpayers and reduce Mello-Roos taxes for all Talega homeowners. This will save Talega taxpayers from being overtaxed by nearly $60M over the life of our bonds. Susan also served on the Revenue and Tax Advisory Committee for Assemblyman Bill Brough.
Elder Law: Susan volunteers her time speaking to seniors in the community through the Educating Seniors Project, sponsored by the Trusts and Estates Section of the California State Bar, which informs seniors, their families, and the community about laws and resources for protection against elder financial abuse.
To schedule a presentation for your group on preventing elder financial abuse,

Q: Tell us a little about your practice.
I am an attorney who focuses my practice on estate planning, with some added knowledge in the financial field as an Investment Advisor Representative. I have had the privilege of helping hundreds of families in our community secure their futures with complete estate plans, including revocable living trusts, wills, power of attorney, health care documents, special needs and charitable trusts, and I have also assisted many with strategies for financial protection, savings, and retirement. I also help families navigate the probate courts for those who are inheriting property without an estate plan. I have been an attorney for over 25 years, and I am licensed in both California and Colorado.
Q: What is the goal of your business?
A: My mission is to provide the highest quality legal services to my clients and to help families achieve peace of mind through the process.
Q: What inspired you to go into this line of work?
When I graduated from law school, I was a litigation attorney. I also completed a clerkship for the Chief Magistrate Judge at the Federal District Court in Denver, Colorado. Long hours and dealing with controversy taught me a lot as a lawyer, but something was missing for me. After spending a few years at home raising my children I decided to transition to estate planning. I always wanted to help people, and it feels great to know my clients sleep better, knowing they have protected their families and eliminated doubts about the future.
Q: Are there any common misconceptions about estate planning you’d like to clear up?
All too often, people neglect to plan for the future and protect their families by creating an estate plan for various reasons, including a belief that they don't have enough assets or that they are too young. Estate planning is not only for the rich or elderly. There are many components of your estate plan that will protect you during your lifetime, regardless of your age or assets. It's not about what you have, it's about whom you love!
Q: Will you share a little more about yourself and your family?
I live in San Clemente with my husband and three children. Under normal circumstances we are busy and running around non-stop with sports (mostly basketball) and musical theater. We enjoy volunteering in the community and are also active members and volunteers at our church. We have a dog named Donut, who was rescued from China, and two cats: Elvis and his mother, Blue Belle. I love cooking and baking for my family and walking in our beautiful community. Our family has been through some major personal challenges and through this last year as well, I have gained powerful perspective on faith, family, career, parenthood, and the crucial need for parents to be engaged in the lives and education of their children.
Q: Anything else you’d like to share with the community?
We are open for business! We are able to provide free consultations either by phone, video, or in person with extra safety precautions and social distancing in our large, airy conference room.
